DUNNET HEAD

The most northerly point in mainland Britain, Dunnet Head has stunning sea cliffs and coastal grassland. These are home to puffins, razorbills, guillemots and fulmars. Above the cliffs are some very diverse coastal heathland and grassland habitats with special plants such as spring squill, thrift and roseroot.

Dunnet Head has stunning sea cliffs and coastal grassland. These are home to puffins, razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, kittiwakes, shags and cormorants. We are undertaking annual seabird monitoring work as part of national surveys to contribute to our knowledge of how seabirds are doing. Dunnet Head Lighthouse is an active 19th century lighthouse that stands on the cliff top of Easter Head on Dunnet Head. The lighthouse is tall and was built in 1831 by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson. The lighthouse was automated in 1989, and the keepers were withdrawn. It is now checked remotely by the Northern Lighthouse Board operations centre in Edinburgh.
